Skill Building at the Bullock Permaculture Homestead
When?
The core dates for our 2012 Skill Building Program are Mar. 30 - Oct. 29, but participants are encouraged to arrive earlier and stay later.
What?
Each year we work on different projects. Consequently, the skill building program is
different every year. Our projects provide hands-on experience in many
of the following skill areas: organic gardening, grafting, pruning,
electrical, plumbing, irrigation, metalworking, carpentry, nursery
management, pond construction, mushroom propagation, ferrocement
construction, canning & food preservation, cooking, working with small
animals, plant propagation, bee keeping, pedal-powered machines, solar
hot water systems, photovoltaic systems, natural building, mechanical,
and more.
A typical day in the life of an participant would probably look like this:
| 7:30 | Breakfast |
| 8:30 | Gather with other participants and residents to weed strawberry patch en masse |
| 11:00 | Head to kitchen to help prepare lunch for the crew |
| 12:30 | Lunch |
| 1:45 | Work constructing a new woodshed with a small group |
| 5:45 | Take a hot solar shower & relax |
| 6:30 | Dinner |
| 7:30 | Hanging out around the campfire or quiet evening in the library |
| 10:00 | Reading before bed or cribbage 'til dawn! |
We work four to five days per week, with the remainder left unscheduled.
Expenses?
We ask each of our participants to contribute $150/month to our land fund,
which is used to supply tools and materials for our projects. Participants
also share the cost for bulk food not grown here. Opportunities to earn
money are plentiful on the island.
Where Would I Stay?
We have numerous tent pads available scattered about the property. We
supply the space and a tarp for rain cover; you supply the tent (if
needed), mosquito net, sleeping bag, pad, etc. Meals are prepared together in our community
kitchen.
Application Procedure & Timeline
The application period for our 2012 Skill Buiding Program is now closed. Before you contact us please read our detailed skill building program description (PDF, 30KB). Note this description has been updated as of July 2011, so you'll want to review if you haven't read it for a while. If it sounds like a good fit for you check back here in September 2012 to see our application procedure and download an application for the 2013 program.
As part of planning out your permaculture education you might also want to read Cosmic Bob's Plan for Your Life. This "tongue in cheek" article actually lays out a valid way to approach skill development in a permaculture context.
